What better time to debut a new hair look than at the Academy Awards’ red carpet? To some, the Oscars best hair moments may come in second to all the red carpet fashion, but in reality, hair can turn out to be one of the most exciting surprises of the night.
In the past, leading actors have ditched their signature shades for unexpected hair colors or tried different styles to take their red carpet moment to the next level. Thanks to the work of Hollywood’s most revered colorists and hair stylists, our favorite celebs can easily turn into hair chameleons at a moment’s notice for Hollywood’s biggest night.
From braided masterpieces to long flowing waves, the stars came out to impress on the Oscars 2022 red carpet. Below, see some our picks for the Oscars best hair moments.
Lupita Nyong’o
The Oscar winner wore an elaborate braided up-do to compliment her sparkling sequin gown perfectly. Nyong’o’s longtime hair stylist Vernon Francois worked with Matrix to create an elevated beehive look, inspired by African figures in classical Greek art. “It is a sister locks updo with a soft, graceful, glamorous feel influenced by what Lupita is wearing,” Francois said in a press release. “Movement is an important part of it, for synergy with the tassels on Lupita’s dress. This is a magnificent, statuesque, regal creation that captures the essence of the Oscars.”
Amy Schumer
To kick off her hosting duties for the evening, Schumer opted for sleek and polished waves with a deep side part. Hair stylist Kimberly Gueldner prepped Schumer with Better Not Younger’s Wake Up Call Volumizing Shampoo and Hair Redemption Restorative Butter Masque. “We did a modern take on Old Hollywood,” Gueldner says in a press release. “A soft, pretty blowout with a deep side part and tucked behind one ear. The look has a timeless elegance.”
Ariana DeBose
For her first Oscars red carpet, DeBose wore her cropped haircut with side swept bangs to elevate her edgy two-piece suit. Hair stylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew used Maui Moisture and GHD tools to create her piecey volume. “I knew what I
wanted to do with Ariana’s hair the moment I saw her red Valentino pantsuit,” Sturdivant-Drew said in a press release. “It reminded me of Halle Barry’s 2002 winning Oscars look! The pantsuit was so chic and had a mix of masculine and feminine energy.”
Kirsten Dunst
Dunst paired her red ruffled gown with a romantic updo by hair stylist Bryce Scarlett. Scarlett used L’Oréal Professionnel’s Steampod flatiron to get a super smooth finish and create soft face-framing pieces.
Kristen Stewart
Taking a page from the ‘Playboy blonde’ trend, Stewart paired her bleach blonde hair with messy waves and a deep side part. Virtue Creative Director Adir Abergel created the look to reflect Stewart’s effortless and relaxed style. “For my friend’s Oscar nomination, I wanted to highlight the essence of Kristen with a relaxed, effortless style that had great structure,” Abergel said in a press release. “The look was inspired by her natural texture and the undone vibes of some of my favorite celebrity styles from the 90’s.” Abergel used the Dyson Supersonic Diffuser to dry Stewart’s hair and the Dyson Corrale straightener to create undone waves.
Serena Williams
Williams worked closely with hair stylist Alexander Armand to land on this super blunt bob. Armand used Maui Moisture to prep Williams’s honey-blonde hair and GHD tools to straighten and smooth. “We collaborated and decided to embark on something edgy, fun, and flirty to match the spirit of her dress, up the ante, display her versatility, and demonstrate her ability to transform,” Armnad says. “We opted to use tried and true products that worked well on her previous textured bob since they work well on both textured and straight hair.”
Vanessa Hudgens
Hudgens’s inspiration for the night? Audrey Hepburn! “We went with a twisted Audrey Hepburn updo as an homage to classic Hollywood and Vanessa’s modern style,” Hudgens’ hairstylist Danielle Priano tells Glamour. “Collaborating with Vanessa is a dream for any artist—she is always so excited to bring our suggested references and ideas to life.” Priano started by prepping Hudgens’ hair with some Healthy SexyHair Fresh Hair Air Dry Styling Mousse, and then clipped in some Irresistible Me extensions.
Megan Thee Stallion
For her first Oscars red carpet, the rapper wore her black hair in a slicked back bun with delicate baby hairs.
Zendaya
As always, Zendaya did not disappoint with a chic french twist to highlight her Valentino crop top. Hair stylist Antoinette Hill used Hidden Crown, JOICO, TRESemmé and T3 to create the elegant look. “For Zendaya’s Oscar’s look, we decided to go with this soft up sweep because we felt it’s very glamorous and Hollywood-esque,” Hill said in a press release. “It also accentuates Zendaya’s beautiful features.”
Jessica Chastain
Who says you can’t dress up a ponytail? Chastain wore her signature red hair in an elegant mid-pony with face-framing pieces. To maintain her vibrant color, Chastain’s hair stylist Renato Campora used Madison Reed to keep the hair healthy and hydrated. “The key to maintaining any hair color is hydration,” Campora says. “The Color Therapy Mask in shade
Zucca not only provides elasticity fortitude but maximizes hair moisture leaving the hair and its color replenished and revitalized.” Campora finished off the look with Hair Rituel by Sisley-Paris products to lock in and hold the style.
