When I was a child, the most dreaded of all PE functions was the mile run. In my younger brain, functioning was the punishment for collaborating in all the exciting sports. Nonetheless, there was just a thing primal about the mad sprint to residence base, or the reckless operate throughout the playground to prevent finding tagged “it.” Or how about the sprint to the motor vehicle following a boring grocery keep outing (hey, it was the 1980s — we lived life on the edge!)?
There were two classifications of operating: The joyful, spontaneous kind and the expected, “quit your whining” form.

In 2019, I took over as the local community coordinator for the Flagstaff chapter of Healthier Children Running Series (HKRS). HKRS is a nationwide nonprofit that exists in response to the increase in childhood weight problems. As a nonprofit, we really encourage all to take part and will accommodate appropriately.

On the last Sunday of each period, moms and dads, siblings and caregivers are invited to operate a mile for their kids. With their young children. Youthful or outdated, fit or no, they run. And most importantly, they have entertaining. Where was this organization when I was a kid?
